Mumbai: An octogenarian couple has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by a special court here for sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl.
The charge against the over-80 couple relates to a case in 2013. The victim lived in their neighbourhood in Girgaon area, PTI reported.
The special court, presided over by judge Rekha Pandhare, charged the couple under section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the husband and wife.
The incident took place eight years ago. According to the prosecution, the couple committed the crime after calling the minor girl to their residence.
The prosecution said that the court relied on the testimony of the victim and her mother, and the girl’s medical report.
The accused was of the girl’s grandparents’ age, and were supposed to take care of her and not sexually assault her, the court observed.
