Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police here has tightened the noose around ‘educated’ violators of COVID-19 guidelines.
The DCP Bhubaneswar on Wednesday tweeted about 1023 people being fined in the city for not wearing masks and violating social distancing norms in the last 24 hours.
Police have urged people to maintain 6 feet distance between individuals and also cover faces properly to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Since Saturday, 2671 people have been penalised for such violations.
A total of 1682 persons were fined on Sunday and Monday and another 989 last Saturday.
The penalty for the first and second violation is Rs 500. For subsequent violations, it is Rs 1000 each.
The Odisha government had earlier warned violators of stern action from September 9.
“The surprise checks in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack will continue to curb blatant violations of social distancing and obligatory mask norms. Violators will be penalised because of whom the virus is spreading,” Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Jena had said.
