Golaghat : At least 12 people died and 25 others were injured when the bus in which they were travelling collided with a truck in Assam’s Golaghat district on Wednesday morning.
According to reports, the collision took place around 5 am on the under-construction national highway in Balijan area near Dergaon in Golaghat when 45 picnicker were traveling in the bus from Kamarbandha to Tinsukia’s Tilinga Temple and Dibrugarh’s Bogibeel for a New Year picnic and the truck entered the “wrong lane” of a diversion created on the 4-lane road.
Following the accident, locals rushed to the site and engaged in rescue operations. “Foggy conditions made matters worse,” a local resident told Northeast Now.
Police said that the truck was coming from Jorhat’s side. “Ten bodies were recovered from the site and sent to Dergaon CHC. 27 injured persons were referred to Jorhat Medical College & Hospital where two succumbed to their injuries,” Golaghat SP Rajen Singh told the media.
