Bhubaneswar: A total of 12 people were arrested and over 1.45 quintal ganja seized from them last month as urban district police of Bhubaneswar stepped up its drive against narcotics trafficking.
The arrests were made by the police in four different cases in June 2023, police said.
This apart, cash of Rs 5620, six mobile phones and a four wheeler vehicle have also been seized from the traffickers.
While efforts are being made at the police station level against this drug trade, POPD and Team-60 formed under “Operation White Spider” are also keeping a close watch.
On June 22, a special team of Dhauli PS conducted a raid on the Lingipur-Uttara bypass road and arrested three persons with seizure of 60 kg of ganja, one car, three mobile phones and cash of Rs.1620.
Similarly, on June 24, a team of Badagada PS conducted a raid near Netaji playground and arrested three accused persons and recovered of 25 kg of ganja from their custody.
Again on June 29, Airfield PS staff conducted raid near Sarakantara level crossing and a total of 30 kg 100 grams of ganja, two mobile phones and Rs 4000 were seized from four accused persons.
The police have also launched ‘Operation White Spider’ to curb the trafficking of brown sugar. A total of 31 cases relating to possession and distribution of brown sugar have been registered between January 1 to June 30 2023 and 59 people have been arrested. Over 365 grams of brown sugar and Rs 1,02,045 had been seized in these operations.
During the same period, 97 people have been arrested for possession of marijuana in 44 different cases. Over 13.137 kgs marijuana and Rs 7.90 lakh seized from the traffickers.
