Baripada: Vehicular movement was disrupted at many places in Baripada of Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday owing to a 12-hour bandh called by Mayurbhanj Adivasi Revolutionary Youth & Student Association (MARYSA) demanding establishment of Santali University in the district.
Hundreds of vehicles including trucks and buses remained stranded on both sides of National Highway-18 as the agitators staged a road blockade at Murgabadi and picketed at several places.
Most business establishments downed their shutters while offices and educational institutions remained closed in the town.
“Santali language is a major language being spoken by the tribals in various parts of the district and other parts of the state. So, the district administration should not ignore the interests of the tribal community and take immediate steps to give its due place in the district by setting up a dedicated university”, an agitator said.
