Berhampur: Amid Raksha Bandhan celebrations, a 26-year-old youth allegedly stabbed his 13-year-old cousin at Jagannath Vihar under Bada Bazaar police limits in Odisha’s Berhampur.
The deceased has been identified as Prajukta Panigrahi (13).
According to sources, the incident took place when the accused, who is studying M Pharma, along with her family members had gone to her relative’s house to attend a death anniversary ceremony. He attacked Prajukta and another cousin Ayushman (14) with a knife. while they were playing upstairs and elders were busy with rituals. They sustained grievous injuries in the attack and were rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared the girl dead. The injured boy was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.
The accused, who fled the spot after committing the crime, reportedly attempted to end his life by jumping in front of a bus. He was, however, rescued in a critical condition and admitted to a hospital at Hinjili.
The exact reason behind the attack was not known immediately.
