Rourkela: Two bicycle riders died after being run over by a speeding car while crossing the road near Jharmunda village in Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Wednesday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Kshirod Pruseth and Sambaru Sahu of Jharmunda.
According to sources, the accident took place when they were on their way to Badagaon on a bicycle for some work. The car, which was reportedly en route to Sundargarh from Rourkela, fled the spot after hitting the bicycle. But locals chased the vehicle and caught up with it near Jagatgarh. The driver was later detained by police.
Following the accident, tension ran high as irate locals placed the bodies on road and staged a blockade demanding compensation for the bereaved families, affecting vehicular traffic. Police later reached the spot and tried to pacify them.
