Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday arrested two persons and detained six others in connection with the attack on four policemen inside Saheed Nagar police station on Sunday night.
Police commissioner Satyajit Mohanty told journalists that three special teams were conducting raids in different parts of Bhubaneswar to nab another accused involved in the assault. “The police will not spare anyone involved in this incident. We will take exemplary action,” he said.
Preliminary investigation shows that some criminals, said to be the supporters of Prakash Tripathy, a BJD leader in VSS Nagar area, assaulted four policemen including assistant sub-inspectors MCH Murmu and Abhaya Rout, inspector-in-charge Biranchi Pati and a constable, inside the police station. They also ransacked the police station, damaging flower vases, television sets, telephones and CCTV cameras.
The incident took place after Tripathy was assaulted by two vehicle owners he was trying to pacify following a road accident near GL Colony on Sunday night. After being assaulted, the BJD leader went to Saheed Nagar police station and lodged a complaint after which the police picked up three accused, including the two quarreling vehicle-owners.
The trouble began when the police reached the police station with the arrested people. Around 8-10 supporters of Tripathy suddenly attacked them and tried to drag the three men out of the PCR van. The supporters chased the accused inside the police station and severely thrashed four policemen when they tried to shield the accused.
The criminals fled the police station after the arrival of three platoons of police.
