New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has come down hard on Tablighi Jamaat and banned 2,550 of its foreign members who had been in India during the nationwide lockdown enforced by the government to curb the spread of novel coronavirus.

According to a PTI report, the foreign nationals will be barred entry into India for a period of 10 years.

Tablighi Jamaat had organized a massive congregation in New Delhi’s Nizamuddin area in March, which emerged as a COVID-19 hotspot in India.

There were visitors from several countries, while thousands from India who took part, travelled back to their home states and tested positive for coronavirus.

According to Home ministry officials, the decision to ban foreign Tablighi Jamaat members was taken after it was found out that they were illegally living in mosques and religious places in different states of India.

The Jamaat’s leadership is being probed for violating norms under the Epidemic Diseases Act and its volunteers from abroad have been booked for violating visa norms and the Foreigners Act.
