Nagpur: In one of the longest encounters, lasting almost 10 hours, at least 26 Maoists were killed in a fierce battle with security forces in a dense forest in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district on Saturday.
According to police, four security persons were injured in the exchanges and had to be shifted to Nagpur for treatment.
“We have recovered 26 bodies so far. The deceased Maoists will be identified by Sunday morning,” The Indian Express quoted SP Ankit Goyal as saying.
Police officials said around 100 elite C-60 commandos of Gadchiroli police carried out the operation, which started at 6 am and ended around 4 pm.
TIE sources said that cops had information that Maoists were camping in the forest.
The group mainly comprised Korchi Dalam members, led by Sukhlal of Gadchiroli divisional committee of CPI(Maoist).
