Baripada: At least three women were killed and four others critically injured in a lightning strike at Karanjia in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Saturday.
Sources said the incident took place when the victims were inside a house in Ankura locality under Ward No. 15 of Karanjia Notified Area Council (NAC).
While three persons, all stated to be women, died under the impact of the lightning strike, four others sustained critical burn injuries. The injured were admitted to hospital for treatment.
The thatched house caught fire following the lightning strike. Further details are awaited.
The victims had assembled for making preparation for the cremation of one person who had passed away when the mishap occurred, the sources added.
It may be noted that India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning about lightning and light to moderate rain in some parts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Balasore districts. People were advised to keep a watch on the weather for worsening conditions and be ready to move to safer places protect from lightning strike.
