Sonepur: Three Class VI students were killed while another sustained critical injuries after being hit by a speeding car near Saradhapalli chhak on Sonepur-Binika road in Odisha on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Subrat Bhoi (11), Rajesh Pera (10) and Raja Pera (10), all students of Saradhapalli Upper Primary School.
According to sources, the four students were standing near the gate of the educational institution when a speeding car dashed against the boundary wall and then ran over them. The accident took place around 11 am.
One student died on the spot. While one of the grievously injured succumbed at Sonepur district headquarters hospital, the third died while being shifted to VIMSAR, Burla.
The injured, identified as Kapil Bhue (13), is still under treatment. A senior official of the administration visited the hospital to know the condition of the injured.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed in the area as local residents crowded the spot and detained the driver. They also blocked the Sonepur-Binika road, demanding stringent punishment for the accused and compensation for the aggrieved families.
Police soon rushed to the spot, seized the car and detained the driver. Further investigation is underway.
