Chirala (Andhra): A major train accident was averted in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, thanks to the alertness of local people.
Some villagers of Ipurupalem, near Chirala town in Andhra’s Bapatla district, noticed broken tracks while passing by the railway station this morning and wasted no time in informing officials, reported India Today.
Railway officials inspected the track on reaching the spot and saw the danger.
They gave instructions to stop the approaching Sanghamitra Superfast Express (Bengaluru to Bihar’s Danapaur) immediately.
Repair work was carried out while the Sanghamitra Express and other trains on that route were halted for about 45 minutes.
Normal train services were restored about an hour later.
Neighbouring Odisha witnessed a horrific triple-train accident just 20 days ago. As many as 292 people were killed and around 1,000 injured when the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express entered the loop line, crashed into a goods train and derailed before the Yeshvanthpur-Howrah Superfast Express reached there from the opposite direction and rammed into some of the Coromandel bogies which lay on the tracks.
