Mumbai: T20 cricket is a game for youngsters. Yet, the Indian squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup comprised of three very senior cricketers.
The stunning come-from-behind Cup-winning triumph over South Africa on Saturday provided the perfect setting for the trio to bid goodbye to the shortest format of cricket on an incredible high.
Virat Kohli, 35, conveyed his decision to the cricket world during the Man-of-the-Match presentation ceremony on Saturday, Rohit Sharma (37) revealed it at the post-match press conference.
Ravindra Jadeja (35), the third ageing star, followed suit on Sunday.
All three will continue playing Tests and ODIs, as well as ODIs.
“With a heart full of gratitude, I bid farewell to T20 internationals. Like a steadfast horse galloping with pride, I’ve always given my best for my country and will continue to do so in other formats,” Jadeja stated.
“Winning the T20 World Cup was a dream come true, a pinnacle of my T20 international career. Thank you for the memories, the cheers, and the unwavering support,” the left-arm spinner and left-handed batter added.
Jadeja played all 8 matches in the T20 World Cup, but failed to make his presence felt.
He bagged just 1 wicket and scored 35 runs in the limited opportunities he got to bowl and bat.
Fellow-allrounder Axar Patel, who is also a left-arm spinner and batter, emerged from Jadeja’s shadows in this tournament, making an important contribution (47) in the final and picking 9 wickets in the meet.
