Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday arrested four youths and detained another in connection with an alleged incident of reckless driving in Odisha capital.
While a minor, whose credentials are being verified, has been detained, one of the arrestees has been identified as Fayaz Khan, a resident of Jharpada area here.
Kharavel Nagar police have registered a case in this connection under Sections 281/109/132/ 296/54/3(5) of BNS, and Section 184 of MV Act.
A traffic cop called and informed the police station about the incident, which took place around 9.30 am. According to the vigilant cop, “….some delinquents on 4 cars (from Big Bazaar Square to Saheed Nagar) were driving in a very rash and negligent manner on Janpath putting lives of co-commuters in danger”.
Police have seized 3 of the 4 cars (a Safari, one XUV and a Creta) involved in the incident.
Earlier in the day, a video of group of youths driving recklessly at very high speed on Janpath, posing a threat to other riders, had gone viral on social media. If terrorising the commuters and choking traffic was not enough, they were seen driving on the dividers and pavements.
The incident triggered outrage among citizens, which prompted the Commissionerate Police to register a suo moto case.
Within hours, the five youths were nabbed and two 4-wheelers were seized. Another vehicle was seized later.
Interestingly, the rash driving incident came a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled to visit Bhubaneswar (turned into a high security zone) to launch Subhadra Yojana, raising serious concern about law and order situation in the state capital.
