Berhampur: In a significant move, five students of MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Berhampur city have been expelled from the hostel for ragging their juniors.
According to Dean of the medical college Suchitra Dash, the decision to expel the senior students from the hostel followed a thorough investigation by the anti-ragging committee.
In addition to expulsion from the hostel, the students have been banned from receiving scholarships, fellowships and other benefits provided by the medical institute.
Earlier, the five were barred from entering the medical campus for six months.
In recent past, MKCG Medical College and Hospital has been in the midst of controversy over frequent ragging incidents.
Some junior MBBS students had filed complaints with the National Medical Commission (NMC) which instructed the Dean to launch an investigation into the matter and take appropriate action
Several second-year students had accused their seniors of switching off the hostel lights and beating them up, abusing them and even forcing them to dance. The students further alleged that they were being brutally thrashed by the seniors whenever they tried to resist the torture.
Sources said that first-year students on their promotion to second year have been lodged in hostels (1, 3, and 4). However, their shift to the new hostels led to an increase in their alleged torture, harassment, and ragging by their seniors.
