Sundargarh: The toral number of scrub typhus patients mounted to 361 in Odisha’s Sundargarh with the detection of six new cases during the last 24 hours in the district.

However, health officials said there is nothing to be worried about as the district has adequate stock of medicines to provide proper treatment to the patients.

The testing facility is also available at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) and Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH), Chief District Medical Officer Kanhucharan Nayak said.

A special team of doctors is also ready for the treatment of patients infected with scrub typhus, while an awareness campaign is being undertaken to give detailed information about the disease to the people, he said.

Notably, scrub typhus is transmitted by the bites of infected chiggers (larval mites). It is spread to people especially farmers who frequently visit farmland or forest. The most common symptoms of the disease include fever.

The chigger bites can cause itchy, inflamed bumps on the skin called ‘eschar’. It is one of the infections if left untreated, can have fatal consequences.
