Bhubaneswar: The mercury soared to 37.8 degree Celsius in Bhubaneswar before noon on Friday with Jharsuguda recording the highest maximum day temperature of 39.8 degree Celsius, the regional meteorological centre tweeted.
While Keonjhar was second with 39.2 degree Celsius, four other places recorded 37 degree Celsius and above: Sambalpur (38.4), Chandbali (38), Bhubaneswar (37.8) and Balasore (37). Similarly, Hirakud recored 36.8 degree Celsius, Gopalpur (33.8), Puri (33.6) and Paradip (32.2) by 11.30 am.
The state capital had recorded 31.8 degree Celsius by 8.30 this morning.
While the day temperature is likely to remain 3-5 degree Celsius above normal for two days, the heatwave in the state may ebb after April 15, the MeT office said.
Heatwave is likely to scorch one or two places in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Angul, and Balasore during the next 24 hours while yellow warning has been Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Sonepur and Boudh on Saturday. The Met office has forecast light to moderate rain or thunderstorm activity at one or two places in Khurda, Cuttack and 14 other districts on Sunday.
On Thursday, 25 places had recorded 40 degree Celsius or more. Baripada, the district headquarters town of Mayurbhanj in north Odisha, at 43.5 degree Celsius was the hottest in the world, according to weather information service provider Ogimet.
