Islamabad: A court here sent former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to 8 days’ custody of National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the country’s top anti-corruption body.

NAB had asked for a custody of 10 days for questioning Imran in corruption cases, reported AFP.

Imran, arrested yesterday during a routine hearing in Islamabad, was taken to an unknown location overnight before appearing behind closed doors in a specially-convened court at the police headquarters.

The former World Cup-winning captain claimed in court that he is being tortured in custody and not even allowed to use the washroom. He also alleged that he was administered an injection to induce a slow heart attack.

The case will next be heard on May 17.

The arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief, still a popular figure in Pakistan, triggered massive protests across the country leading to widespread violence and destruction of property.

Hundreds of police officers have been injured across, while in Punjab province, nearly 1,000 people have been arrested and the army ordered to deploy to keep peace.

Schools have been ordered to be closed across the country, and final exams cancelled.

Imran, who was ousted as PM last year, has waged a sustained campaign against Pakistan’s military.

According to him, the multiple cases against him are part of an effort by the Shahbaz Sharif-headed government and military establishment to prevent him from returning to power.

Imran’s arrest came hours after the military slammed him for alleging that a senior officer had been involved in a plot to kill him.
