Balasore: On the first day of deworming drive on Thursday, 8 students of a school fell sick after taking the medicine in Odisha’s Balsore district.
According to sources, around 360 students of Banabihari Lal School at Gudikhala under Basta police limits were given Albendazole tablets as part of anti-worming drive on the day. Soon after taking the tablets, some students complained of head reeling and stomach pain.
While some students started vomiting, 8 students including 6 girls turned unconscious. The school authorities rushed the unconscious students in ambulance to the community health centre (CHC) at Basta. The students were administered saline and medicines by the doctors in the CHC. The doctors said their condition was stable after treatment.
It may be noted that Dr Bijay Kumar Panigrahi, Director, Department of Health and Family Welfare, on Tuesday had said his department in association with UNICEF will organise the drive on August 10.
For those who would miss the dose on August 10, a deworming mop-up round (MUD) will be held on August 17. The campaign will be implemented through anganwadis and schools to reach about 1 crore beneficiaries in the state, he added.
