Bhubaneswar: A day after a huge quantity of gold and silver was held near Bhubaneswar airport, sleuths of the Commercial Taxes and GST on Tuesday intensified their probe to ascertain if there was any irregularity in the transportation of the large consignment.

As per information, the packages which were intercepted near the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here on Monday comprised over 80 kg gold and 200 kg silver. A thorough verification is underway to ascertain the exact weight of the precious metal.

Sources said that CT & GST sleuths intercepted the consignment when it was being transported from Mumbai to be delivered to various jewellery stores in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

While preliminary probe suggested that the consignment had arrived from Mumbai airport before being transported to the jewellers, the officials are now thoroughly examining the relevant documents like GST invoices and waybills.

Representatives of various jewellery stores have also reached the CT & GST office in the city with relevant documents for verification and scrutiny. Similarly, the regional head of BVC Logistics has also been summoned for questioning, sources said.

The gold and silver ornaments were being transported in two vans of BVC Logistics company headquartered in Mumbai. The company provides logistic services of jewellery items in various parts of the country. Four persons travelling in the vans have also been detained by GST officials and they are being questioned.

A senior CT & GST official said that the exact weight of the packages is being ascertained and verification of documents is underway. Details will emerge after investigation.

The stock and the documents were being examined to ascertain lapses or gaps in transportation to evade taxes. If any discrepancy is found, a penalty will be imposed on violators, he said.

A noted jewellery store owner said most consignments generally arrive by air and carry details of those supposed to receive the packages sent by traders.
