Kabul: Ashraf Ghani resigned as Afghan President and fled the country after the Taliban entered the capital city on Sunday.
According to a Reuters report, Ghani fled Kabul escorted by four cars and a helicopter full of cash.
“As for the collapse of the regime, it is most eloquently characterised by the way Ghani fled from Afghanistan: four cars were full of money, they tried to put part of the money into a helicopter, but everything did not fit. And some of the money was left on the runway,” Russian diplomatic mission spokesperson Nikita Ishenko was quoted as saying by a Russian news agency on Monday.
Ghani was barred from landing in Tajikistan capital Dushanbe. He is currently in Oman from where he is likely to travel to the United States.
According to reports, former National Security Adviser of Afghanistan Hamdullah Mohib is accompanying Ghani in Oman.
Accused of leaving his countrymen in panic amid Taliban takeover, Ghani took to social media to explain his action.
“The Taliban have won with the judgement of their swords and guns, and are now responsible for the honour, property and self-preservation of their countrymen,” said Ghani.
