Bhubaneswar: The primary school teachers of Odisha have decided to stage a Maha Samaves (mass rally) in Bhubaneswar to press their demands on September 26.

Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, president of Prathamika Sikshak Sangh (Primary Teachers’ Association) Brahmananda Maharana said they had decided to launch the rally after the government failed to take any steps to meet their demands.

The primary teachers from across the state would assemble at Bhubaneswar and participate in the rally in front of the Assembly in Bhubaneswar, he said adding that members of 9 teachers’ association have announced to extend their support to the agitation. Nearly 1 lakh teachers are likely to participate in the Maha Samavesh.

Besides, the teachers would resort to cease-work and stage demonstration in front of all block education officer (BEO) offices in the state, he added.

Earlier, the primary school teachers had reportedly decided to put on hold their protest following an appeal made by the state government during discussion at a meeting in Bhubaneswar. Around 1.8 lakh teachers across the state have been protesting since September 8.

Their demands include abolition of the contractual appointment system, hike in grade pay and restoration of the old pension scheme.
