Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and party’s veteran leader Awadhesh Prasad resigned from Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday after they decided to retain their Lok Sabha seats, which they won in the recent elections.
Yadav will continue as MP from Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency while Prasad will keep his Lok Sabha seat from Faizabad which he won by defeating two-time MP Lallu Singh. Prasad, who was elected MLA from Milkipur, has sent his resignation to Principal Secretary of Legislative Assembly Pradeep Dubey, NDTV reported.
The SP chief had been the MLA from Karhal assembly seat and was designated as the Leader of Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha. On Tuesday, he announced that he would be resigning from Uttar Pradesh’s Karhal Assembly seat.
“I have met the workers of Karhal and Mainpuri and told them that since I have won elections from two seats, I have to leave one. So, I will inform you about leaving the Vidhan Sabha seat soon,” Yadav said in a presser.
Yadav will be the Samajwadi Party’s leader in Lok Sabha where it has sent 37 members from UP, the party had earlier declared.
