Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been given an ultimatum to step down by October 28. The deadline has been issued not by the Opposition, but by the MPs from his Liberal party.
Why did Liberal MPs ask Justin Trudeau to resign?
According to reports, at least 24 of the 153 Liberal MPs had been meeting secretly to oust Trudeau in an attempt to save their party from a possible poll debacle. Reports claimed that public opinion surveys had indicated that the Liberals were likely to face a poll debacle under Trudeau’s leadership.
Last month, the Liberal Party was defeated in two of its safest constituencies in special polls. The MPs were reportedly upset over the preparations for the upcoming elections, which are due before October 2025.
It has been a decade since Trudeau has been heading the government in Canada. However, his popularity has sunk. The rival Conservatives were ahead of the Liberals by 19 points in the last special polls. Fearing a fiasco, at least 24 MPs signed a document seeking Trudeau’s ouster, reports claimed.
However, Trudeau has claimed while speaking to reporters that ‘the Liberal Party’ was ‘strong and united.’
