Bhubaneswar: The annual health insurance of MLAs and former MLAs of Odisha Assembly has been raised to Rs 10 lakh from 2022-23 financial year.

Considering the rising costs of health services, the legislators have been demanding hike in the insurance amount from the present Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Assembly Speaker had forwarded the demand to the state government.

Following the approval of the Finance department, Speaker Bikram Keshari Arukha announced the enhanced health insurance for the MLAs and former MLAs.

The government, which has been giving insurance coverage amounting to Rs 5 lakh to the MLAs and former MLAs since 2012-13 financial year, will now extend insurance coverage of Rs 10 lakh to them from this financial year.

As per the approval, besides the Cabinet members, 124 MLAs of the present Assembly and their 88 spouses will avail the revised health insurance. The benefit will also be extended to 317 former MLAs and their 245 spouses.
