Ganjam: Another criminal was arrested following an encounter with police at Nuabaiganapada under Sadar police limits in Ganjam district on Friday. He was identified as Santosh Gaud.
Following a tip-off, Berhampur police carried out a raid and intercepted Gaud. Sensing trouble, the criminal opened fire om the team. Police retaliated and hit Santosh on both legs.
Police inspector Shiv Shankar Mohapatra, sub-inspector Gobinda Chandra Mohapatra and two constables were also injured in the exchange of fire.
A pistol, three rounds of bullets and a motorcycle were seized from him.
As many as 15 cases of murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and extortion are pending against Gaud at different police stations. He is the prime accused in the recent murder of a journalist and his wife in Chhatrapur, police sources said.
