Birmingham: Jeremy Lalrinnunga won India its second gold medal in weightlifting, and fifth overall, while creating a Commonwealth Games record by lifting 300 kg in the Men’s 67 kg category at Birmingham on Sunday
This win came for the 19-year-old from Mizoram despite initial cramps and a potential elbow injury. He had earlier represented India in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires and Commonwealth Championships in 2021. He won gold in both events.
Earlier in the day, Bindiyarani Devi had bagged silver medal in the 55 kg women’s category.
India opened its medal account in the Birmingham Games on Saturday morning courtesy of Sanket Mahadev Sargar’s silver in men’s 55 kg weightlifting event with a total lift of 248 kg (113 + 135), while Gururaja Poojary won bronze in men’s 61 kg category. Mirabai Chanu had expectedly clinched the first gold medal for the contingent in weightlifting 49kg.
