Bhubaneswar: Amid looming controversy over a ‘sextortion racket’ run by Archana Nag, another woman blackmailer was arrested by the Rajasthan Police in Odisha capital on Saturday for allegedly tricking businessmen into marriage and looting money from them.
The fraudster has been identified as Preeti Desai (42) of Karnataka. She was residing in Bhubaneswar by introducing herself as an IT professional.
According to sources, businessmen in Odisha, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and other states of the country had fallen into her trap. She is accused of clicking pictures of intimate moments with her victims, whom she befriended through social media. She would then blackmail them by threatening to implicate them in false cases and demanded lakhs of rupees from them.
A complaint was recently filed by a victim against Desai in Rajasthan for allegedly looting a huge amount of cash after getting married to him.
Based on the complaint, Rajasthan police initiated a probe into the matter and contacted Twin City Commissionerate Police after tracing her location. A joint team of Rajasthan and Chandrasekharpur police then conducted a raid at her apartment and arrested Desai. A car (Chevrolet Beat) was also seized from her possession, which she had allegedly stolen from a businessman.
It is pertinent to mention here that Desai had allegedly trapped four to five businessmen in Bhubaneswar and blackmailed them into coughing up lakhs of rupees. The apartment, where she was staying, also belonged to another business with whom she had established a relationship, the sources said.
Previously, a cloth merchant from Karnataka had also killed himself after falling into her trap. Three cases are registered against her.
Notably, Desai was expanding her list of contacts through social media and blackmailing her victims after tricking them into marriage.
