Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area has formed over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

The system is likely to become more marked during the next 24 hours, it added.

There will be heavy rainfall mostly in the northern and north interior districts of Odisha for two days from September 29. Besides, coastal districts will experience thunderstorms with lightning during this period. The IMD has issued yellow and orange warnings for September 28, 29 and 30.

WARNING FOR FISHERMEN

Squally weather with surface wind speed reaching 40 to 50 gusting to 60 kmph is likely over North Bay of Bengal, off Odisha coast till September 30. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, North Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha coast during this period.

Senior meteorologist Dr Surendranath Pasupalak had earlier told the media that a cyclonic circulation is set to form over the western Pacific Ocean on October 3. It will move along the Philippines coast on October 5, the South China Sea on October 6 and Myanmar coast on October 7.

It will head towards the east-central Bay of Bengal on October 8 where it will turn into a low-pressure area on October 9. Due to this, there will be heavy rainfall in Odisha for three days till October 12.

Meanwhile, the remnant of Cyclone Gulab is likely to re-intensify over the Arabian Sea. The system will traverse along Telangana, Maharashtra and reach close to the Gujarat coast before possibly re-emerging on September 30. Very heavy rainfall is expected in areas of coastal Gujarat later this week, the IMD had said.

Notably, very severe cyclone Gaja, which had formed in Bay of Bengal in 2018, had crossed the Tamil Nadu coast and re-emerged in the Arabian Sea from central Kerala.
