Bhubaneswar: While Odisha received moderate rainfall under the influence of low pressure over northwest Bengal on August 28, a similar system is most likely form over the same area in the first week of September.

According to former Director of the Regional Meteorological Science Centre of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and Director of the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of SOA University Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, barring sporadic rainfall at some places for two days (Monday and Tuesday), the weather in Odisha will remain mostly dry till September 5.

“It may change after September 5 as a low-pressure area is likely to form over the north-west Bay of Bengal either on September 6 or 7,” Sahu said.

He, however, said that the state will receive relatively less rainfall as it will be a weak system.

On the deficit rainfall, senior scientist of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre Uma Shankar Das said Odisha received 29 per cent of deficit rainfall between August 1 and 29. As against average rainfall of 910 mm, the state has received 641.6 mm during the period, he said.

Among the rain-deficit districts, Jajpur recorded 57 per cent deficit rainfall followed by Bhadrak (49), Balangir (45), Angul (40), Keonjhar, Kalahandi, Sambalpur and Jharsuguda (38), Boudh (37), Gajapati and Kandhamal (36), Deogarh (34), Sonepur (33), Nabarangpur (32), Bargarh (30), Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj and Rayagada (26), Sundargarh, Kendrapada and Ganjam (25), Nayagarh (23), Balasore (22) and Puri (20).

“Besides, the state received 28.9 per cent of rainfall between August 19 and 25 which is about 63 per cent less than the average rainfall,” Das added.
