Bhubaneswar: While heavy showers due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal continue to pound Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more intense spells of rain with another low pressure likely by September 17
Director-General of IMD Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Monday informed that a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal on September 17. The system will turn into a low-pressure area within 24 hours and move in the west-north-west.
“It is most likely to reach the north Odisha coast the following morning. Under its influence, heavy rain will lash the state from the afternoon of September 17,” he said.
Mohapatra, however, said the intensity of rain will be less than that triggered by the low pressure on September 10.
The IMD DG said that the current system, which crossed the Odisha coast near Chandbali, is likely to move towards Chhattisgarh. “While the rainfall will gradually subside in coastal areas, its intensity will rise in the interior districts, including Sambalpur, Angul, Deogarh, Bargarh and Boudh,” he added.
At 11.30 am, the deep depression was centred about 70 km west-northwest of Chandbali and about 90 km east- southeast of Keonjhar. It is likely to move west-northwestwards across north interior Odisha, north Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh during next 48 hours and weaken into a depression during the next 24 hours, the IMD had said in its latest bulletin.
Red warning of extremely heavy rain has been issued for one or two places in Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Sonepur, Dhenkanal, Jharsuguda and Bargarh till 8.30 am on Tuesday.
The Met office has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall (orange warning) at one or two places in Balangir, Sundargarh, Boudh, Keonjhar, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Kendrapada, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Cuttack.
Heavy rainfall (yellow warning) is very likely to occur at isolated places in Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam Nayagarh, and Mayurbhanj, it added.
