Khurda: Another man was trampled to death by a herd of elephants in Odisha’s Khurda district on Saturday. This is the second such incident in the district this month.
According to sources, the victim, identified as 22-year-old Bidhan Paschimkabat of Chhatipur village on the outskirts of Khurda town, had gone to his farm field to check the standing crop in the afternoon. At the time, the herd of elephants, which has created panic in the area for the last few days, came to the crop field.
The elephants dragged Bidhan from the field to nearby forest and trampled him to death. Later, the villagers found him dead with fatal injury marks on his body.
Following the incident, tension prevailed in the area as the villagers protested the inaction of Forest officials against the elephant menace.
It may be noted that two persons were trampled to death by an elephant while they were keeping a watch on their standing crops at Jaritapur under Tangi block of Khurda district on the night of December 3. Following the incident, tension ran high in the locality as people demanded compensation for the bereaved families.
