Asif Ali Zardari Elected As Pakistan President Again

Islamabad: Co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari was on Saturday elected as Pakistan’s 14th President for the second time.

He will replace Dr Arif Alvi, who had completed his five-year term last year, but continued in office as the new electoral college was not formed.

Zardari (68) was the joint candidate of the ruling alliance PPP and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) with which PPP had recently tied up to form the national government.

He secured 255 electoral votes, beating the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) candidate Mahmood Khan Achakzai (75) who got 119 votes.

Zardari, a businessman turned politician, is the husband of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

He was Pakistan President was from 2008 to 2013.
