Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam caused by incessant rains remains severe as more than four lakh people across nine districts have been affected, although water levels have started to recede.
As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three persons have lost their lives due to the first wave of floods in various parts of the state.
As the flood has hit nine districts of Assam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured every possible help and support to the state to tackle the situation. In a tweet, Shah has assured Chief Minister Himnata Biswa Sarma that the NDRF team is already on the ground and conducting relief mission. Although the water levels have started to recede, the situation still remains grim.
Amit Shah personally spoke to the CM and assured him of all possible help by the Centre to tackle the situation.
The deluge has affected Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nalbari and Udalguri districts of Assam.
In a video conference with deputy commissioners (DCs) and other senior officials, Sarma directed all government departments, including NHAI, NHIDC, NDRF and SDRF, to be proactive to reach out to the affected people during the natural calamity.
Floodwaters have damaged embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in multiple districts, including Darrang, Sonitpur, Kamrup, Golaghat, Nalbari, Barpeta, Baksa, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Udalguri, and Lakhimpur.
To assist those affected, the administration has set up 101 relief camps across the affected districts, accommodating 81,352 individuals. Additionally, 119 relief distribution centres are operational in five districts. Currently, 1,118 villages are submerged, and around 8,469.56 hectares of crop area have been damaged, sources said
