Assam Woman Files Complaint Against Odisha’s ‘Fake Doc’; Duped Of Rs 21 Lakh

Bhubaneswar: The list of women whom the ‘fake doctor’ from Odisha has cheated is only growing longer with another woman accusing Ramesh Chandra Swain of cheating her.

The woman, a lady doctor from Guwahati, has filed a police complaint against Swain alleging that he had married her and duped her of Rs 21 lakh besides gold jewellery.

Ramesh Swain married the woman doctor in Guwahati during the COVID pandemic in May, 2021, in the presence of his brother-in-law Ganesh and driver Papu.

Ramesh Swain and his associates stayed in a five-star hotel in Guwahati, she stated in her complaint and . Later, they came to Bhubaneswar and lived in an apartment. As per their prior plan, the fake doctor’s sister, another woman and Hindu priest made all arrangements as per the Vedic rituals for the lady doctor’s entry into the house.

Rashmita Beura, sister of Ramesh had allegedly taken gold ornaments, mobile phone and costly saree from the lady doctor.

Commissionerate Police had arrested Rashmita on Wednesday after picking her up from her house in Kendrapara.

Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash, on Wednesday, said Rashmita was hand-in-glove in almost all his fraudulent activities and they found evidence in their video conference call.

Police an interaction (over video call) with some of the women whom he had cheated, police had also learnt that Rashmita was present during the weddings, he said. “The complainants identified her as the sister of the fake doctor and claimed she was present during their marriage. Swain’s sister told the women that her brother was a doctor,” he added.

Rashmita helped Ramesh by speaking to the women, he was to marry, thus reinforcing his identity as a doctor and winning the trust of the women and their families, the Bhubaneswar DCP said. Her husband Ganesh is however absconding.
