Jharsuguda: The injuries sustained after being assaulted by one his students proved fatal for a lecturer as he succumbed on Tuesday night after 8-month-long treatment at VIMSAR in Odisha’s Burla.
He was working at PKSS Degree College at Kantapali in Jharsuguda district.
According to sources, the incident took place on February 22 when lecturer, Amit Barik, questioned a Plus III student for turning up late for his class, leading to a heated exchange. The argument took an ugly turn while the enraged student thrashed the teacher in front of the whole class. The lecturer, who sustained grievous injuries, was rescued by other students and immediately rushed to a hospital at Jharsuguda. As his condition worsened, he was later shifted to VIMSAR.
Following a complaint in this regard from principal Krushnarani Bhoi, police registered a case under Section 307 (IPC) and arrested the accused student, a resident of OPM area of Brajarajnagar town.
He is currently out on bail.
“After the death of the lecturer, the case will now be referred to the court and Section 302 (IPC) will be added,” informed Jharsuguda SDPO Nirmal Mohapatra.
