Assembly Adjourned Till Monday As BJD & Opposition Members Stall Proceedings

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Assembly Speaker SN Patro on Saturday adjourned the proceedings till Monday following the continuous ruckus over the distress sale of paddy by the farmers and suicide attempt by a BJP member inside the House.

As soon as the question hour began, the opposition Congress and BJP members rushed to the well of the House and demanded the question hour to be cancelled and the members allowed to discuss the mandi problems in the state.

Following the Opposition’s demand, the BJD members including ministers Naba Kishore Das, Susanta Singh and Dibya Shankar Mishra urged the Speaker to direct the BJP member Subash Panigrahi to tender an unconditional apology for attempting suicide inside the House. The ministers said they will not allow the House to run unless he apologised.

As the ruckus continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 11.30 pm and then till 4 pm. When the House met after the adjournment, the BJD and opposition members continued to stick to their stand and stall the proceedings. With the ruckus not abating, the Speaker adjourned the House till Monday.

However, the government could move eight bills in the House amid the din during the day.
