Mumbai/Chandigarh: Claiming it to be a major breakthrough, Punjab police said a resident of Mumbai, identified as Sujeet Sushil Singh, was arrested from Ludhiana on Friday in connection to the high-profile murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique. The accused, a resident of Ghatkopar in Mumbai, had allegedly fled to Ludhiana a month back. Police said he was hiding at the residence of his in-laws for over a month.
With this, the total number of arrests in the murder case is likely to be 15, reported the India Today. The Punjab Police said Sujeet was involved in the murder conspiracy and was informed about the plan to kill Baba Siddique three days in advance by Nitin Gautan Sapre, another accused. Sujeet had allegedly provided logistical assistance for the crime.
According to police, Sujeet had introduced the alleged mastermind of the murder, Zeeshan Akhtar, to the arrested accused Nitin Sapre and Ran Kanaujia, India Today reported.
Police have not officially linked the murder to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, who had claimed responsibility for the crime in a purported social media post. But, on Wednesday, Mumbai Police claimed that Siddique’s shooters were in touch with Lawrence Bishnoi’s brother, Anmol, before they killed Siddique.
The accused were allegedly using multiple social media accounts to remain in touch with Anmol, police had said.
Siddique was shot dead outside his son Zeeshan Siddique’s office while he was bursting firecrackers during Dussehra celebrations on October 12.
