Balasore: The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have achieved a significant milestone with back-to-back flight test of vertical launch short range surface-to-air missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, off Odisha coast.
On Friday, the missile engaged a high speed aerial target at a different altitude. “In both the tests, missile successfully intercepted a high speed low altitude aerial target mimicking sea skimming aerial threat,” the DRDO said.
On Thursday, a flight test of VLSRSAM was also carried out from a land-based vertical launcher at ITR around 3 pm when the missile system effectively tracked and engaged the target, demonstrating its operational capabilities. The performance was meticulously monitored using Radar Electro-Optical Tracking Systems and telemetry, ensuring the missile’s tracking and targeting capabilities met the desired specifications.
The tests also aimed to validate various upgraded elements of the weapon system, including the Proximity Fuse and Seeker.
The VL-SRSAM’s successful tests would help India to bolster its naval and air defence capabilities, crucial for safeguarding its maritime interests and responding to regional security challenges.
