New Delhi: The ban on physical poll rallies and roadshows comes to an end on January 31, tomorrow. The Election Commission, which had on January 22, extended its ban on physical poll rallies and roadshows till this date, will decide on Monday whether to extend the ban and, if yes, till when.

The commission had banned poll rallies to control the spread of COVID-19 in India.

Five states are going to the polls in February and March 2022.

The Election Commission will take stock of the COVID-19 situation and vaccination campaign in the five states Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur and Punjab on Monday. It will discuss the same with the Union health secretary, chief secretaries and chief electoral officers of the five states.

The Election Commission is not in a hurry to lift the restrictions, despite an improvement in the COVID-19 situation in the country. The relaxation of restrictions is likely to be done in a phased manner according to the polling phases, India Today reported quoting sources.

Voting for the Assembly elections in the five states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa will be held between February 10 and March 7 in seven phases. The votes will be counted on March 10.
