Phulbani: Normal life came to a standstill in Kandhamal district on Friday following a 12-hour dawn-to-dusk bandh call given by the district BJP Mahila Morcha in protest against the obscene viral video of the BJD leader and former MLA Debendra Kanhar and rape and murder of a minor girl of Kotagarh area.

All trading establishments, educational institutions and government offices remained closed while vehicular traffic in the district came to a grinding halt. The BJP Mahila Morcha activists are picketing at all the important places and also staged road blockade.

“Due to the gross apathy of the district administration, the safety of women is at stake. The incidence of rape of minor girls in the district has gone up alarmingly. We demand immediate shifting of the Collector and SP from the district,” president of Kandhamal District BJP Mahila Morcha, Archana Pradhan told mediapersons here.

The BJD, on the other hand, has said the bandh will have no effect on the people of Kandhamal district. “The BJP has given the bandh call only to take political mileage,” president of Kandhamal BJD Mahila Janata Dal Anima Kanhar, told the media.
