New Delhi: An interim government in Bangladesh, led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, will take oath on Thursday, the country’s Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said.
The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place at 8 pm, General Waker told reporters.
Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday announced the appointment of 84-year-old Yunus as head of the interim government following the violent ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to General Waker, Yunus will lead Bangladesh through a “democratic process” after returning to the country.
“He is very eager to do this. I am certain that he will be able to take us through a beautiful democratic process and that we will benefit from this,” General Waker said in a televised address to the nation, adding that the advisory council could have 15 members.
Yunus, who had gone to France for a medical procedure, said he was looking forward to helping Bangladesh overcome its current turbulence.
“I’m looking forward to going back home, see what’s happening and how we can organise ourselves to get out of the trouble we are in,” he told reporters before boarding a flight at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport bound for Dubai, from where he will take a connecting flight to Dhaka.
