New Delhi: The Centre on Thursday said it was open to the idea of conducting competitive exams in local languages. If implemented, this would mean that candidates from Odisha would be able to answer these exams in Odia.

On Thursday, MPs from the Southern states raised the matter in Parliament, especially with regards to holding the banking exams in local languages. Following this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said she was looking into the demands.

According to news agency PTI, the matter was raised in zero hour by G C Chandrasekhar of Congress.

The MP said the Indian Banking Service examinations and other recruitment tests should be held in the Kannada language alongside English and Hindi for the convenience of local aspirants.

Sitharaman said several Lok Sabha members have met her on the issue as it relates to all states who have their own languages.

“The matter is of serious concern. I am seized of the matter. I will look into it and come back to the House,” PTI quoted her as saying.
