Chennai: Faced with a lot of criticism for objecting to a tweet on beef, Chennai Police was forced to apologize and delete the post.
The Twitter user @AbubackerOfficl, whose profile describes him as state coordinator of political party Naam Tamizhar Katchi in Tamil Nadu, posted a photo with the caption ‘beef curry’.
Greater Chennai Traffic Police responded by posting “such posts are unnecessary here” on its Twitter handle.
That triggered a chorus of protests, with numerous users questioning what was wrong with the post and why someone can’t eat beef.
Senthilkumar, MP of the ruling DMK party, criticized police too, and asked who handles its Twitter account.
“What’s wrong with that post? On what basis does the Chennai Police give this unnecessary advice about what to post and what to eat? There is no action taken against hundreds of abusive/false posts,” the politician wrote.
Chennai Police explained that they said such posts should be avoided as it appeared on their page.
“But we apologize for posting this by mistake,” they said and deleted the post.
