New Delhi: The Congress has urged the Central government not to indulge in vindictive politics and ensure adequate safety and security of Rahul Gandhi and other leaders taking part in Bharat Jodo Yatra.
In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal has alleged multiple security breaches since Bharat Jodo Yatra entered Delhi on Saturday.
The letter stated that Delhi Police, which is under Union Home ministry, “completely failed in controlling the surging crowd and maintaining a perimeter around Rahul Gandhi, who is assigned Z+ Security.”
Delhi Police remained “mute spectators” even as the situation was so severe that Congress workers walking with Rahul had to form a security perimeter.
Congress earlier alleged that the Intelligence Bureau have been interrogating those who took part in the Yatra.
Pointing out that every citizen has a Constitutional right to move throughout India’s territory, the letter mentioned Bharat Jodo Yatra is a padayatra to bring peace and harmony to the country.
“The government should not indulge in vindictive politics and ensure the safety and security of the Congress leaders,” the letter added.
“Moving forward, Bharat Jodo Yatra is slated to enter the sensitive state of Punjab and J & K in the next phase starting from January 3, 2022. In this regard, I request you to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of Shri Rahul Gandhi, a Z+ protectee, and of all the Bharat Yatris and leaders joining the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” Venugopal wrote to Shah.
