Bhubaneswar: To ensure timely collection and disposal and reduce malpractice by sanitary staff,  the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced a tracking system to monitor the real-time movement of garbage collection vehicles in the city.

The around 400 GPS-enabled light commercial vehicles (LCV), carrying household waste, can now be tracked at the integrated command centre (ICC), the high-tech platform that oversees various municipal services.

“We want to ensure that vehicles reach the doorstep of denizens on time and there is no pendency of waste. There have been several instances of waste collectors delaying or skipping collection,” BMC Commissioner Vijay Kulange was quoted as saying.

Kulange stressed that this tracking system will act as a deterrent against such practices.

Starting September 1, residents will be able to track waste vehicles’ real-time movements through the Safa app. This monitoring mechanism will also enable the assessment of individual LCV operators’ performance. Those frequently dodging assigned duty can now be identified and relieved from their responsibilities.

He added that door-to-door waste collection will be intensified in the city by adding 40 more LCVs to the current fleet of 395.
