Bhubaneswar: BJP leader and Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi has been nominated as India’s candidate for the vacant position in the executive panel of Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Following her nomination, Aparajita will leave on a nine-day visit to Kigali in Rwanda, South Africa, for the elections scheduled from October 9 to 12.
She thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Speaker Om Birla for nominating her.
“No words can express my gratefulness to PM @narendramodi & LS Speaker, Sri @ombirlakota ji, for nominating me as India’s Candidate on the Executive Committee of Inter- Parliamentary Union of 178 nations. Got orders yesterday- Going to Kigali,Rwanda. I seek best wishes of all,” she tweeted.
The IPU facilitates parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world, according to IPU’s website.
Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 parliaments in the world, 79 are bicameral (158 chambers) and 111 are unicameral, making a total of 269 chambers of parliament with some 44,000 members of parliament. IPU membership is made up of 178 national parliaments, the website said.
