Bhubaneswar: Almost five months after the alleged death by suicide of software engineer Sweta Utkal Kumari in Odisha capital, the Twin City Commissionerate Police on Thursday arrested her boyfriend Soumyajeet Mohapatra from his residence in Sambalpur.
According to sources, a team of Chandrasekharpur police picked him up from his house at Bansidharnagar in Sambalpur and arrested him under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC. He was being brought to Bhubaneswar.
Notably, Sweta allegedly hanged herself to death at the apartment in Sailashree Vihar area here on August 21, 2022, over a strained relationship with her boyfriend. A native of Bhadrak, the 25-year-old was working as a technology analyst with a reputed IT company here and had been staying with her three women colleagues in the apartment on rent.
Soon after her death, Sweta’s brother alleged that she took the extreme step since Soumyajeet was threatening her to make photos of their intimate moments viral. The family also accused him of extorting money from Sweta.
Following which, a case was registered against him at Chandrashekharpur police station.
