Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced its decision to launch ‘Mahila Surakhya Yatra’ on May 17 to protest against rising atrocities against women in the state.

“The Mahila Surakhya Yatra will commence from May 17 and conclude on May 29. During the 11-day campaign, a total of 450 public meetings will be held across Odisha and Mahila Suraksha Raths will be rolled out from seven prominent temples to demand appropriate steps by the state government to address women’s safety,” said party’s state secretary, Lekhasri Samantsinghar, at a press conference here.

He further said the government has completely failed to check crimes against women. “In most of these cases, the victims are minor girls. Effective measures should be put in place to strengthen law and order so that women feel safe in the state,” he added.

The campaign will be led by senior women leaders, including Lekhasri Samantsinghar, Pravati Parida and Radharani Panda, party sources informed.
